I’m a writer, researcher and teacher. For as long as I can remember I’ve been interested in words and what they mean and how to better put them together. And I’m learning all the time. As science-fiction author Isaac Asimov wrote: ‘Don’t tell me the sun is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.’As an author, I write mainly narrative non-fiction and short fiction. And I’ve been trying out some poetry. My latest work apart from my academic output is a creative non-fiction book, A Great and Restless Spirit: The incredible true story of Australian Harry Hawker. Publication date: March 2022. Video: https://youtu.be/R8xQQo1zK7Q Before that, my most recent non-fiction book is The Chalkies: Educating an Army for Independence. My narrative non-fiction biography, Hustling Hinkler: The short tumultuous life of a trailblazing Australian aviator, was selected for the Queensland Writers Centre/Hachette Manuscript Development Program, and published by Hachette Australia. Short fiction achievements include winning the 2016 Roly Sussex Short Story Award and publication in the 2019 Margaret River Short Story Competition. I’ve also written for Griffith Review, the Brisbane Courier-Mail’s QWeekend magazine, the Sydney Daily Telegraph’s ‘History Page’, and for The Conversation. I’m currently an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at Griffith University, Brisbane, a mentor with the Queensland Writers Centre, and convenor of Oxley Men’s Shed Writing Group. For what it’s worth, my formal qualifications are BA, BEdStud, MEd, PhD. I’ve lived and worked in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Papua New Guinea and briefly in England, and have met lots of great people along the way. My academic research is in the fields of adult and vocational education, and lifelong and workplace learning. Many of my journal articles and book chapters are co-written with colleagues, particularly from the School of Education and Professional Studies at Griffith University, Brisbane. Currently I live in Brisbane, Queensland with my wife and my laptop. I have four adult children and seven grandchildren. I’m a great believer in persistence over brilliance to get you where you want to go. Hi Darryl. I have just finished “Hustling Hinkler” which was given to me by my mother as a gift Christmas last. When I saw you were a local writer I thought I would try and get a message to you and congratulate you on a job well done. I found the book a joy to read as you have a great turn of phrase. I have a general interest in aviation and had grown up with knowledge of a “local” aviator (I’m Maryborough born) who flew on the world stage. I am now much better informed about the feats of this remarkable man and I could thoroughly recommend it to a novice wanting to build a career in aviation. I’ll look out for your next venture. Later this year I am planning to visit Bert Hinkler’s crash site in Italy, so will probably write that up on this blog.I do have another book coming out soon, and I’ll put details on this website when they’re available.
